Back to North Yorkshire Moors Routes

There are two climbs on this ride. Both are on tarmac. The ride starts with the first climb out of Kildale. The second climb is out of Hob Hole towards the end of the ride. In between is fairly easy going with a couple of short, sharp blasts. The road out of Kildale takes you up onto Kildale Moor. Where the road bends sharp left to drop into Baysdale, our route is straight ahead south, where a gate leads onto a hard gravelly track. Just above Battersby Cragg, there is a small cairn marking the track junction with "the Flagged road". This is another fairly solid track, southeast over Ingleby Moor.

After dropping to and crossing Black Beck the track turns a bit boggy up the short steep part of the climb to the ridge above Grain Beck. Turn right here and follow the track down to Armouth Wath, tucked into the Head of Baysdale. Track building has spoilt this isolated and derelict site.OK, the harder surface makes easier riding, but the spot has lost some of its previous beauty. Steep climb from here out of Armouth Wath, which leads up onto Baysdale Moor. Follow this track to the packhorse bridge over Great Hograh beck. This is one of my favourite spots on the North York Moors, so look after it and don't leave any rubbish!

Leave the packhorse bridge heading east over Great Hograh Moor on the "Skinner Howe Cross Road. This was mostly a narrow track but it is getting wider with increasde use. It does get very soft after rain so best avoid it as its no fun and you are going to cause much more damage than riding it when dry! A short steep drop takes you to Little Hograh Beck, which is crossed before the last stretch of moor before joining the John Breckon Road. We now make a left and left again for a fast tarmac drop to Hob Hole.Cross Baysdale Beck via the ford or the connvenient footbridge if you don't want damp feet. Now for a big climb over Kildale Moor. You need strong legs for the first 200 feet, which is steep. The reward is a downhill to West House before another short climb over the railway and up to the Kildale road. A left will take back to Kildale and a visit to Glebe Cottage Tea Room.
