Leave the Lion Inn heading south for half a mile and then turn right for a fast downhill along a narrow twisting lane. Keep to the road through Church Houses and continue up a sharp climb to the 'T' junction near Monket House. Turn right and after 100 yards turn left through a gate opposite Monket House.

A newly dolomited track takes you up the climb to the junction on Rudland Rigg. This used to be a good off road down hill before the dolomite! Turn left at the junction and continue south along Rudland Rigg. From Golden Heights its a bumpy, long downhill to the point where you will turn off left above Bog House. Note this track is not a public right of way but remains open to the public at the land owners discretion. Follow this track to the road on Harland Moor and turn right descending to the junction near Lowna. Turn left here and after a short, steep climb turn right at the next junction to Hutton-Le-Hole.

If you want a pot of tea continue straight on at the junction in Hutton. Otherwise turn left past the carpark and follow the road to Lastingham. Turn left at the pub and then left again up a lane which starts to climb and leads to the moor gate to Spaunton Moor. Head straight on and north on a soft wide track over Spaunton Moor, still climbing at an easy gradient. Turn left at the junction and continue past Anna Cross to the top of Chimney Bank.

The final stage of this route is easy but a little monotonous. Cross the road and pick up the old railway. Keep on this all the way to the to the roadside car park opposite the Farndale road. Turn right back to the Lion Inn.
