Back to North Yorkshire Moors Routes

A short route with only one climb and a good fast downhill. Starting from the car park at the bottom of Black Hambleton, head up the track taking the bridleway off to the right shortly after the first gate. This bridleway takes you down through Silton Forest coming out at the lane near Nether Silton. Two choices here. Follow the route as indicated by the grid references below by going through the village and turning left onto a farm bridleway. This route gets very soft in wet weather and I would recommend that you just follow the road round to Kepwick if conditions have been wet for somedays previously. It can also be difficult to follow but you will eventually hit the road to the west of Kepwick.

Head towards Kepwick and then take the bridleway to the left up to Pen hill. Most will probably need to get off and push as this track narrows and climbs steeply to Pen Hill. After Pen Hill it is fairly easy going but can be very soft in places. The track climbs around Gallow Hill and then enters the very top edge of Boltby Forest eventually joining the Cleveland Way track at Steeple Cross.

Turn left here onto the "Drove Road" a stoney track turning wide and grassy before a short rise to White Gill Head. The track makes a sharp left turn here becoming stoney and is in fact quite boring for a mile and a half due to the stone wall blocking any views on the left and drab moor on the right. Eventually you will reach the top of the final descent back to the car park. Rocky and steep at first turning into smooth finish down to the gate.
