Billingham & Castle Eden
Route Ref: NYM15
Back to North Yorkshire Moors Routes
This
is just a short route I do from home when I just have a hour or so spare for
a bit of exercise. I have tried to use as much off road as possible but I
have found that some bridleways marked on maps, which I have planned into
a route simply do not exist.
Start from Northfield School on
Thames Road head north and cross over the A19 taking the first left immediately
after the bridge. This lane passes White House farm and turns into a rough track
leading into the old "quarry area". At Viewly Hill, don't turn right
towards the buildings but go straight on down the hill and over Billingham Beck.
This track takes you across the valley where you will turn right at the 'T'
junction. This track takes you to Harper's golf course. Check no one is "teeing
off" before you cross. No need to antagonize anyone!
The track goes
single track for a while around a field to another White House Farm and then
joins up with Blakeston lane. Turn right and follow the lane to the junction
at Middlefield Farm. Turn left under the A177 and take the first track off to
the left. This
takes you to the old railway where you turn right towards Thorpe Thewles. There
is a fairly steep section where the viaduct has gone missing. This
is a reasonably "safe" bit of steep downhill to practice getting your
nerve. Cross the beck and turn left on the road into Thorpe.
Go straight through the village
passing or stopping at the Hambleton Russell on your left. Just before the
lane joins up with A177 a bridleway goes off to the left. Take this and keep
to the right where the track forks at the buildings. I would recommend that
you avoid this section when the weather has been wet. You have been warned!
If you want to miss it out, carry on to the A177 and join the route after
one mile at the narrow lane to Grindon. Tackle this only in the summer or
on a hard frost. Follow the yellow arrows the Stillington Road. You may have
to rely on horse hoof prints to pick you way across ploughed fields./p>
Turn right when
you reach the Stillington road and follow this back to the A177 and go straight
over down the lane to Grindon. Keep on this lane which turns into a hard track
as it crosses over the old Castle Eden railway (now a walkway). The track turns
south, climbs a little and gives a surprisingly good view across Teesside to
the Cleveland Hills.
Turn right at
the T' junction and down the hill to a broken gate leading onto the road beside
Fulthorpe Garage. Turn left and follow the road back to Billingham.
