Black Hambleton & Hawnby
Route Ref: NYM17
Back to North Yorkshire Moors Routes A shorter alternative to NYM02 with an easy start and nice bit of single track.
This route does not actually pass through Hawnby but by-passes via Hill House
End and an off road section with a little more single track through woods.
From the car park head towards Hawnby taking the bridleway off to the right after
half a mile. Follow this down over the stream and on to Dale Head. The next
bit is a bit tricky to make sure you get onto the track accross Locker Low Moor.
After passing through the gate follow the track around the south side of the
building and downhill accross a grassy field. At a point at 496948 a path goes
off to the stream. It seems more logical to continue around the field. Don't.
Follow this path (it is still a bridleway) over the stream and along the very
narrow path with the stream on your right. This brings you to a gate at 497947
and after crossing the stream again. After the gate and a short climb you are
on to the single track over Locker Lower Moor. A gate at the end of the moor
will lead you down to the road bend at the bottom of Hall Lane.
There are only two ways to go now....and both are up. Head up the gut wrenching climb
towards Hawnby and continue along this road with fine views of Hawnby Hill until
you get to the cattle grid at 539916, Moor Gate. Just over the cattle grid,
take the bridleway cutting across Hawnby Hill. Follow this track as far as Hill
End House. The map shows the bridleway down to the River Rye cutting off on
the south side of the building but this has now been moved to the north side.
A small blue/yellow arrow indicates the way. Head down the field aiming for
a metal gate to the right. Through the gate turn left and follow the fence down
to another gate on the left. Just after passing through the gate the trcak (now
single track) forks. Take the right fork down to the bridge over the River Rye.
Not sure what makes it a river! This is one of those valleys that you cross
for the first time only to find the track is over grown or does not exist anymore.
But not this one. The way is clear right to the bridge. Follow the track bending
left and then right, cross another stream, through a gate and eventually join
a dirt track on the other side. Turn left at the track and follow to the road
at New Hall.
Now turn right and prepare for a little hard work. The road is tarmac for about
three quarters mile before turning to a hard track at the turning for Arden
Hall. Now get your knees pumping. There are two short steep climbs through this
old quarry area. The first climb finishes at a gate where the track levels out
at the quarry. The second climb starts after 50 yard and the incline steepens
as it rounds the end of the quarry. Just near the top of the this steep bit
you can take the left bridleway if you
want to do the extended route through Boltby Forest. Otherwise continue straight
ahead and follow the track becoming easier for the last mile and half to the
old drove road above Kepwick Quarry.
Turn right onto the drove road for a steady downhill on short grass, passing the
site of the former tavern (the name eludes me at the moment). Follow the track
sharp left at White Gill Head. The track is now loose stones and the views are
well..there arn't any. A wall to the left and the moor to the right for a mile
and a bit. A cairn marks the start of the downhill back to the car park. It's
stoney at first with a rock step but smooths out towards the bottom.
